If you’re overlooking breakfast, the yolks on you.

Beyond the standard avocado toast trend, consumers are looking for healthy, convenient and innovative breakfast items. Given its growing popularity and lower cost of goods, breakfast is easily the most profitable meal of the day.

Breakfast Is On The Rise And Shining

According to The NPD Group, breakfast is the only daytime with an increase in traffic at a 3% jump, while lunch and dinner daytimes saw no increase.

The most popular breakfast item at quick-service restaurants were breakfast sandwiches, a popular option for consumers grabbing a meal on the way to work.

What’s more, NPD also predicts that breakfast traffic will jump up to 13% by the year 2022. That’s a lot of eggs!

Why Breakfast?

Breakfast is known as the most important meal of the day. Considering the 3% increase in breakfast traffic, modern consumers seem to be taking this philosophy out of their kitchens and on-the-go.

Even more interesting is that 19% of restaurant breakfasts are consumed at home, while 35% are consumed inside a restaurant, and the remaining 27% inside the car.

These numbers could indicate that consumers not only are prioritizing breakfast despite their busy lifestyles, but that convenience is a major driving point in consumer choices.

Delicious And Nutritious

Not only are consumers eating more breakfast, but current reports show that offering healthy choices are just as important as convenient options.

The NPD Group notes that breakfast “is the meal where [consumers] tend to focus on more healthful eating” and they predict that this health-forward breakfast trend will keep growing. This is great news for restaurants looking to use innovative menu items to drive consumer loyalty.

Breakfast Lovers Are Loyal Lovers

A report from Sense360 that analyzed roughly 5 million restaurant visits revealed that breakfast eaters are the most loyal customers!

By working their way into customer routines, QSRs like Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts and Peet’s Coffee dominate in customer loyalty. This information is extremely beneficial to any restaurant trying to develop more customer return.
